Journal # 9
This chapter brought me back to my climate change and society class that I took last semester. This class focussed a lot on how people can affect and change the stigma of climate change so through this we watched many speeches. This is when I was first introduced to pathos, logos, and ethos. Many of the speeches we watched were persuasive so it makes sense as to why we needed to know these three words. I believe that all are important parts of speeches, However I have always been a sucker for pathos. I am a huge “emotion” person so I think it is one of the most persuasive weapons to use and really can pull at the heart strings of your audience. However all are important and as the chapter stated, we need to appeal to the motives of the audience. I really enjoyed how they listed the five basic needs that we can appeal to to help persuade our audience members.
Chapter 24 was very helpful in the speech writing process that I am about to undertake. Persuasive speeches can be difficult because you have to present the facts and opinions in such a way that allows the audience to be persuaded to your side. I had no idea about the difference between the warrants. Since I enjoy pathos the most so I would typically use a more motivational warrant. This will help the audience feel compelled to side with me as their emotional instinct will come out. I also enjoy the section on counter-arguments because it helps show the importance of addressing both sides. When I did debate in high school it was important to do this to show both sides and also show why your side is the better option. I will definitely use this chapter to help me start preparing for this speech. Hopefully it will be the best one so far especially with the fallacy section so I can understand what should and shouldn’t be included.
